This chapter introduces the book’s exploration of the vital role stations play in urban life, focusing on transit users’ victimisation and their perceptions of safety during their journeys. It emphasises the importance of transit safety in its own right while framing stations and cities as interconnected systems. The chapter also examines the application of systems thinking to the governance of stations within a broader planning context. We link the challenges posed by conditions at the stations and beyond to broader sustainability goals, highlighting the need to tackle inequalities in victimisation and the vulnerabilities of certain groups. Finally, we outline the structure of the book.
