Sustainability has been a concept developed as a solution to global problems since the second half of the twentieth century and has triggered a significant transformation in the textile and apparel industries. Sustainable production and consumption models have been supported with policies such as the Paris Agreement signed within the scope of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, the European Union’s Green Deal and the Circular Economy Action Plan, and sustainable strategies in production and practices such as producer responsibility are being popularized. Digital transformation contributes to this process with technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), big data, 3D design, blockchain, augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR). The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated this transformation process and increased the importance of sustainability and digitalization by changing both supply-demand balances and consumer attitudes. While consumers’ environmental awareness has increased, issues such as sustainable fashion, second-hand shopping, product recycling and ethical production have gained importance. At the same time, consumer behavior has also been shaped by digital tools with the influence of mobile shopping applications, e-commerce, personalized recommendations and social media. Social marketing also plays an important role in this transformation, and brands organize campaigns to ensure that consumers make conscious choices. In this regard, fashion retail is being reshaped around digitalization and sustainability; during this process, the effects of the new practices, approaches and tools that emerge with the transformation on consumer behavior need to be carefully analyzed. In this introduction chapter of the book entitled “Changing Textile and Apparel Consumption in Transformative Era of Sustainability and Digitalization”, these issues are briefly mentioned and information is provided about the contents of the following chapters that address the sustainable fashion consumption, the role of social marketing as an innovative approach to promoting sustainable consumption, digital fashion retail and consumer tendencies, and modern tools and technology used in fashion and retail businesses and the consumers’ attitudes towards them.
