As discussed in previous chapters, local actors have agency, and as analysed in Chap. 3 while discussing central actors, locals also operate as a community of practitioners that share background knowledge and a pool of repertoire from which they can choose diverse kinds of activities to portray the identity of the nation. This implies that locals are aware of the narratives promoted from the centre, but at times they adapt those narratives, in a practice I refer to as the local detail in CD. In this chapter, I define the local detail in CD with reference to the Japanese case, and by drawing on my research on the Japanese case within Spanish-speaking audiences, I explain how the local detail can be studied by collecting data from everyday CD activities. In this chapter, I also refer to how data collection on local detail in CD is conducted, drawing on my case section. From this chapter onwards, most of the discussion is based on the case study and relies on my own participant observation and interviews accounts.
