A Brief History of the Pharmaceutical Industry
摘要
The evolution of the pharmaceutical industry has been shaped by groundbreaking discoveries and significant challenges. Before 1900, medicines were primarily derived from natural remedies, and there was limited understanding of infectious diseases. The development of antitoxins and vaccines laid the foundation for the growth of the pharmaceutical sector. This was followed by the introduction of synthetic dyes and their by-products, which played a vital role in creating early chemotherapeutic agents used during wartime to treat infections. These advancements set the stage for the transformative post-World War II era, characterised by rapid progress in research, technology, and the implementation of stringent regulations to ensure drug safety. In the 1960s and 1970s, significant advancements in drug discovery, analysis, and production resulted in the development of numerous new medications, including antiparasitic drugs essencial for both animal and global health. Together, these milestones highlight the pharmaceutical industry’s enduring impact on public well-being and modern drug development.
