This chapter overviews the latest institutional responses of the Balkans to Hamas’s heinous attacks on October 7 and the ensuing Israel’s carnage in Gaza. It particularly focuses on the rationale behind which Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo have adjusted or renegotiated interstate relations with Israel, and, at times, with the Palestinian authorities, to corroborate their posture towards their key Euro-Atlantic partners and allies. The chapter looks at the compromises that local institutions and political actors have undertaken to remain loyal (thereby, subaltern) to the EU’s politics of conditionality and the Euro-Atlantic agenda. Foregrounding Kosovo and Albin Kurti’s leadership, “Palestine” provides the lens through which to explore the tensions between the role of the “internationals” in the Western Balkans vis-à-vis local demands and calls for justice and recognition.
