Foregrounding the ICTY’s legacy vis-à-vis Western immunity politics concerning the ICC’s arrest warrants for the Israeli leaders, this chapter aims to provide a new lens through which to understand how previous experiences of international legal cases at the ICTY are re-explored by young generations and relived by older ones in former Yugoslavia. As regards parallels with the Western response to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, this chapter also examines the politically expedient, rather than legally grounded, construction of “otherness” and “need” in the humanitarian discourse, eventually showing not only the much-debated inertia of major democracies and most Western champions of human rights but also their decades-long military stance in the “killing fields”.
