After October 7, 2023, the fallout of the war in Gaza has gone beyond Israel and Palestine. In the Balkans—a region grappling with the complex convergence of post-socialist and postcolonial legacies—many relive their previous experiences of war, uprooting and genocidal violence through the gaze of Gaza. This study explores how the Balkans came to grips with the tumultuous events of the so-called Israeli-Hamas War. The aftermath of October 7 has emerged as ground zero for exploring contemporary discontent and political participation among Balkan citizens who nurture and cherish a culture of remembrance and transnational justice to bolster reconciliation and peace after a past seeped in violence. The following questions theoretically guide this book: Why does the devastation of Gaza reignite old anxieties and unprocessed historical traumas in the former Yugoslavia? To what extent do postulates of solidarity with Palestine enacted in the Balkans resonate with those emerging in the Global South? Does criticism against Israel’s onslaught in Gaza show a different form of contestation in the Balkans against the Western selective logic of universalism, securitisation, peace and state-building?
