Safeguarding Gender Norms
摘要
This chapter presents the first three vignettes, illustrating how men’s accounts of the status quo are key to understanding their lethal violence and overall aggression. Jorge, Celso, and Héctor share a deeply ingrained sense of moral boundaries, despite their differing social trajectories and positionalities. In their narratives, they reconstruct how breaches of certain social norms—such as domesticity, fidelity, and loyalty—constituted direct threats to them as men. Perceived violations of the status quo triggered a dissolution of their sense of self, revealing the implicit moral rules governing intimate relationships. Moreover, unmet expectations—even something as seemingly trivial as not baking a birthday cake—play a crucial role in their violent acts. When their expectations are not met, the discrepancy between their entitlement and their partners’ actions creates a sense of violation, which escalates to lethal violence.
