This chapter offers an account of the fieldwork process and the ethical dilemmas encountered while researching femicide perpetrators, helping readers understand the practical aspects of the study. It covers fieldwork conducted in Latin American prisons, highlighting the strategies used to navigate these environments, the interviewees involved, and the development and structure of the interviews. The chapter also explores the agendas motivating the interviewees to ‘open up’ and share their stories. Additionally, vignettes—composite cases constructed from different men’s narratives—are discussed as part of my anthropological translation process. Ethical considerations are examined, particularly the challenges of conducting research in highly securitised yet vulnerable and porous institutions. Lastly, the chapter reflects on the aftermath of my fieldwork, including interactions with interviewees when they encountered published material based on their testimonies.
