This chapter delves into the theoretical understanding of narratives and their societal impact, positioning them as the central framework for decoding the stories told by harm-doers. It introduces the book’s hermeneutical perspective and explores how narratives operate in society, asserting that they are not mere personal constructs but powerful forces that shape emotions, perceptions, and actions of both the self and others. Rejecting simplistic interpretations, the chapter frames narratives as part of ‘language games’—learned through interaction and practice—where individuals rely on existing narratives as templates for action, including femicide. This perspective prompts critical questions around motivation, context, and the veracity of these stories. Understanding the narratives that sustain femicide is crucial not only for identifying patterns of violence, I argue, but also for uncovering potential avenues for intervention and systemic change. Language, while restrictive, offers a space for subversion and change.
