Groundwater utilisation is progressively increasing with population growth, along with technological development while climate change is imposing additional stress. However, the repercussions of declining groundwater levels are not clearly understood due to a lack of devoted monitoring and scientific studies. In the present study an attempt is made to study trends in groundwater levels from 2005 to 2018 using Box-Jenkins and ARIMA models in the coastal plains of Palar River Basin, Tamil Nadu. The study results show that about 12.82% of the total area falls under the ‘Excellent Fit’, 34.62% of the total area falls under the ‘Good Fit’, 18.59% of the total area falls under the ‘Poor Fit’ and 33.97% of the total area falls under the ‘No Fit’ groundwater recharge zones.
