In recent years, remote sensing (RS) and geographic information systems (GIS) have proven to be essential tools for monitoring and managing water resources due to their high data accuracy and lower cost compared to traditional methods. This research explores how these technologies can be utilised to monitor water quality parameters in Lake Razzaza, a significant and picturesque destination in Iraq. Five samples were collected from different locations of Lake Razzaza between 2023 and 2024. These samples were meticulously analysed in the laboratories of the Iraqi Ministry of Water Resources. To compare the results with remote sensing data, a satellite image of the study area was captured by the Landsat 8 satellite on specific dates: January 18, 2023; April 8, 2023; July 13, 2023; and November 18, 2023. The analysis of key parameters provided a comprehensive assessment of the lake’s environmental conditions. Water temperature ranged from 16 °C to 34 °C, while pH levels varied between 7.2 and 9.3. Conductivity values were recorded between 221 to 2289 micro Siemens per centimetre, and the dissolved solids ranged from 126.3 to 1836 mg/L. Turbidity values were observed between 5.9 and 58 NTU, while chlorophyll levels varied from 24 to 214 mg/L. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of water quality and the sustainability of aquatic environments, highlighting the importance of advanced technologies in environmental monitoring and the need for continued research in this field.
