This chapter explores what current research tells us about what children want from sex education, what parents desire, and what is currently provided, arguing that sex education should be a partnership among schools, parents, and children. It examines literature on best practice, age-appropriate sex education for both children and teenagers. It argues that dismantling long-held, heteronormative beliefs about sex and sexuality to foster open discussion will take time and require coordinated efforts by governments, schools, and parents. The chapter articulates the importance of dialogue around sex that involves active listening to understand children’s own sexual values, preferences, and educational needs rather than merely “talking to” them and reproducing dominant heteronormative narratives. Ultimately, it suggests, this collaborative approach can help young people navigate diverse, positive, and pleasurable sex lives.

摘要
