Ocean Pulse: Integrating Psychology, Technology, and Creative Practice for Transformative Experiences
摘要
Self-transcendent experiences (STE) like mindfulness, mystical experiences and awe redirect attention away from the self, fostering altruistic behaviors and reducing depressive thoughts. People often turn to mindfulness which requires focused practice on perceptual stimuli or try to attain mystical experiences that necessitate psychoactive substances to provide intense self-detachment and new perspectives. But awe, characterized by perceived vastness, can be prompted by everyday life situations and by mediated experiences. In that regard, psychology research can harness the transformative power of mediated experiences created by artists for positive benefits. “Ocean Pulse” is an attempt at informing creative practice with affective and cognitive psychology evidence, and aims to create a short relaxing, entertaining, and thought-provoking multi-sensory experience – a pause in a busy day. The project uses TouchDesigner for visuals, ElevenLabs for audio, and Arduino for physical interactions, providing a cohesive, immersive break that cultivates psychological well-being. Users engage in a guided breathing exercise projected on a screen, using tactile sensors and microphones to interact with the digital content. Visual and auditory feedback synchronized with user actions create an engaging and satisfying experience. A demo can be found at this link: https://youtu.be/yJtaphmYtfc .
