Is Beauty Only Skin Deep? Psychosocial, Ethical and Community Aspects of Facial Difference
摘要
This chapter seeks to improve the understanding of the psychosocial impacts of having a facial or craniofacial difference and to examine how society and clinical teams can best manage stigma, enhance resilience and improve social experiences. It will consider the stigma experiences of persons with congenital and acquired craniofacial differences and explore media, clinical and educational interventions that reduce negative social consequences related to facial differences. Clinicians can build resilience—find blessings in disguise—and further positive life strategies in families and affected individuals. Three steps are outlined: creating optimism and positivity around birth and diagnosis, asking parents and children new and different questions, and furthering a new research model of resilience and health. Examples from literature and clinical settings will amplify the presentation.
