This chapter takes us to an urban community-based project: Bushfire Theatre of Performing Arts Big Book Club. We describe the inaugural “Big Book Club” which emerged as a partnership between the Bushfire Theatre in Philadelphia and Rowan University. The chapter narrates ways that Read, Interpret, Script, Perform (RISP) supports fifth graders in two urban middle schools as they explore the critical realistic fiction novel After Tupac and D Foster by Jacqueline Woodson as a way to connect to their community.
