This chapter examines how a government’s abuse of power can lead to discrimination. Using the Life Histories framework, eighth graders examine and analyze The Wave by Todd Strasser in a struggle to understand moral strength and the courage to advocate against discrimination. In the second classroom portrait, fifth graders in a rural Maryland classroom read Holocaust historical fiction and use Life Histories to examine government and how power can lead to discrimination and oppression. The chapter also provides evidence that suggests Life Histories can work to enact and support culturally responsive literacy pedagogies.

摘要

This chapter examines how a government’s abuse of power can lead to discrimination. Using the Life Histories framework, eighth graders examine and analyze The Wave by Todd Strasser in a struggle to understand moral strength and the courage to advocate against discrimination. In the second classroom portrait, fifth graders in a rural Maryland classroom read Holocaust historical fiction and use Life Histories to examine government and how power can lead to discrimination and oppression.
