Where Do We Go from Here? Looking Forward
摘要
This chapter reiterates the possibilities of Life Histories for enacting culturally responsive teaching that might lead to culturally sustaining and anti-racist pedagogies. What are the implications of inviting readers (students and teachers) to view literary characters as representative of actual lives? How can Life Histories move readers from understanding to empathy to a social consciousness that leads to action? This final chapter considers these questions in light of the work detailed in the book’s chapters. But it also looks at current external forces exerting powerful constraints on educator’s commitment to diverse texts through educational “gag” orders and book banning. We provide educators with suggestions for enacting Life Histories in a polarized world. We also look forward and highlight future projects and texts with middle and high school students. We ask: In what ways might Life Histories adapt and refine itself to suggest its power to shape lives through engagement with critical texts? The work continues with new texts and new contexts, opening readers to a deeper knowledge and understanding of self and their interconnections to others in an increasingly complex world.
