This introductory chapter situates the term ‘metaverse’ in multiple corporate and academic literatures, unpacks its various uses and technological aspects, and makes the case for its continued value as an analytical term. Subsequently, we redefine this as a process of ‘metaversification’ involving the virtualization, datafication, and infrastructuralization of spaces and bodies. This tripartite process involves the drawing in of various activities into virtual worlds while simultaneously pushing the logics of virtualization and datafication into existing physical spaces and bodily practices. Taken together, these processes position ‘tech’ companies as new infrastructures of reality.

摘要
