The methodological contribution of open-Marxism to understanding the state on the basis of class or political struggle can be summarised as critique and contradiction, the openness of categories and social form analysis. The first of three sections of this chapter is about overcoming the methodological closure of categories such as money, value, law and the state – which are shaped by social relations – and showing their dynamism. The attempt to overcome this closure is at the core of open-Marxism’s intervention into Marxist state theory more broadly.

The methodological contribution of open-Marxism to understanding the state on the basis of class or political struggle can be summarised as critique and contradiction, the openness of categories and social form analysis.
