Decarbonization is the process to reduce and eventually eliminate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions with innovations to overcome challenges in clean energy in fields where reducing the emissions are difficult and expensive such as industry and transportation sectors. There is global consensus in reducing GHG emissions and pledges to achieve energy and climate goals in a timely joint effort with policies and scenarios. Carbon capture, utilization and storage in power, industrial, and transportation sectors play key role in decarbonization. The primary innovations for decarbonization include improvements in energy efficiency, environmental protection, sustainable technologies, health, employment, and public engagement. This effort may need substantial undertaking in how we produce and use energy globally.
