Clouds and precipitation are an essential part of the terrestrial water cycle and play an essential role in support of life on Earth. It is not yet firmly established what are the real numbers behind the various processes composing the cycle. However, is is clear that a correct representation of the physics and chemistry of clouds and precipitation in the Earth system models is crucial to obtain consistent scenarios of the future of the Earth in a changing climate. This is why research on clouds and precipitation is by all means a cornerstone of climate studies.
