This chapter opens with the importance of volatiles—especially water—in our future lunar activities. The south pole has been chosen because of water’s presence in Permanently Shadowed Regions. Water has been suggested and finally confirmed by spacecraft including Clementine, LCROSS, Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, Chandrayaan, Chang'e and other lunar probes. The chapter provides an overview of the science of Artemis, and the support of it, including astronaut training at Barringer Meteor Crater, how lunar samples are processed at the Lunar Curation Facility in Houston, and the possibilities of using the Moon as a global data backup for the entire Earth.
