This chapter examines museum representations of Russian and Soviet rule in Central Asia. It identifies three main types of institutions: those dedicated to repression, those focused on Soviet life and achievements, and broader historical museums with sections on colonisation, revolution, famine, purges, and the Great Patriotic War. While many exhibitions still follow Soviet-era models in structure and presentation, differences exist in emphasis across the region: some stress narratives of victimhood, others highlight modernisation and progress, and some omit the period almost entirely. Museums thus function as instruments of memory politics, shaping selective accounts of Russian and Soviet history in the post-independence context.
