Harnessing Geo-Spatial Technology for Balanced Urban Growth and Environmental Conservation in Jos City, Central Nigeria

This chapter sought to explore the relevance of geo-spatial technology in sustainable urban growth and urban conservation in Jos City of Plateau State, Central Nigeria. Although there exist a litany of literature on the relevance of geo-spatial technology to environmental development, there has been no substantial study on the potential contributions of the tech on the rise and sustainability of smart-cities in Jos City of Plateau State, Central Nigeria. The chapter attempts a study of the prospects of geo-spatial technology in achieving sustainability and its prospects in contributing to the rise and sustainability of smart-cities in Jos City of Plateau State, Central Nigeria. This study becomes very expedient because of the global phenomena of global warming and the imminent rise of smart-cities even in Jos City of Plateau State, Central Nigeria, as projected. The qualitative research approach is primarily adopted for the research and published materials including books and peer-reviewed journals, and presented papers were utilized as sources of data. The study revealed that geo-spatial technology is necessary for the achievement of sustainable urban growth and in the preservation of the environment. The chapter also argues that geo-spatial technologies are the cardinal rise and sustainability of a sustainable smart-city in Jos City of Plateau State, Central Nigeria. The technology contributes in engendering urban growth, economic growth, and service delivery, and also protects the environment, Josites, and Jos City dwellers. The chapter posits that some geo-spatial technologies have already been deployed in tackling challenges as Jos City of Plateau State, Central Nigeria and placed the city toward evolving into a smart-city in areas of environmental management, transportation, meteorology and traffic among others.
