The Ottonian reign ended in 1862 after a new revolt demanding a truly democratic constitution. Otto is expelled and a new king ascends to the throne, this time a Danish Prince, George IGeorge I, King of Greece, once again selected by the Great Powers, mainly Britain, which cedes to Greece the Ionian IslandsIonian Islands, as a gesture of good will. The annexation of the region of ThessalyThessaly follows in 1881. All these developments are included in this chapter, along with urban planning innovations in third countries, where the housing and health problems of the working classes are given a great deal of attention. In Greece, this period is marked by the long-awaited distribution of national lands to landless cultivators and the abolition of old Turkish chifliks, an action which results in a fragmentation of properties into small parcels. This phenomenon was to have extremely serious results for building activity in out-of-plan agricultural areas. ThessalyThessaly, with its large assets of rural land, is especially affected.
