The chapter examines key aspects of media audience agency in Europe in the contemporary context of platformization and autocratization as the two key processes that are upending the democratic public sphere. The chapter reviews the evolved understanding of audience agency in communication and media studies, as well as in the sociological perspective on the relationship between structure and agency. The empirical relationships are observed from research examples that show the difference in media-related practices across different media systems/landscapes. Audience-related practices of online media are affected by where people perform them in terms of the macro-level conditions, and the choice of legacy over social media for news use is equally influenced by the macro level, in addition to individual variables. Journalism practice is likewise influenced by the macro level. The chapter recognizes the challenge of autocratization in the platform society and the question what ramifications it has for audience agency. The text questions the possibility of resistance to autocratization in the platform society.
