Throughout history, humans have shaped and adapted to their environments, leveraging technological innovations to enhance their quality of life. However, this progress has often come at the cost of our connection to nature. Nowhere is this ‘disconnect’ more evident than in highly urbanized countries like Singapore, where the pace of development has led to a significant detachment from the natural world (Holmstad in Modernism and disconnection from life. Resilience, 2011; Louv in How modern life became disconnected from nature. Greater Good Magazine, 2017). The evolution of architectural practices from vernacular forms—sustainable and closely attuned to the environment—to modern high-tech constructions driven by economic growth marks a profound shift in the relationship between buildings and their contexts. This transition reflects a departure from locally adapted, resource-efficient methods to globalized, technology-driven approaches that frequently overlook environmental considerations (Meadows et al. in Limits to growth: The 30-year update. Chelsea Green Publishing, 2013). This chapter explores how a card game served as a tool to engage Singaporean teenagers with environmental concerns, empowering them to become proactive citizens and future architects who make sustainable choices and contribute to the regeneration of natural and social environments. To fully appreciate this study, it is crucial to understand Singapore’s transformation from a humble fishing village to the global metropolis it is today. Singapore’s urban and social development unfolded over less than 60 years, compressing into two generations of urban and societal changes that have taken centuries elsewhere. This rapid development has significantly influenced citizens’ perceptions of the human-nature relationship. Understanding this transformation can inspire and inform approaches in other contexts, illustrating how swift progress shapes environmental consciousness and sustainability practices.
