IR as a medical specialty encompasses the diagnosis, clinical management, and treatment of patients by means of image-guided interventions. To evolve the prevalent role of IR as a technical service to an independent specialty, it must be more readily accessible and function in the same fashion as other medical and surgical specialties. A functioning IR outpatient clinic is an important tool for broadening the reach of IR. With an outpatient clinic referral, consultation and the provision of longitudinal care become feasible for interventional radiologists.
