Interventional Radiology (IR) has seen compound annual growth rates between 5 and 10%. Thus, during the last three decades, it has evolved from a niche inside radiology to a clinical specialty indispensable to the modern medical landscape. Together with this, the role of IR has changed gradually from a pure service provider to a more clinically driven specialty taking responsibility for the interdisciplinary care of its patients. With increased clinical involvement and provision of an advanced clinical service, the clinical process of IR has evolved. The latter is well summarized in the Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiological Society of Europe (CIRSE) Clinical Practice Manual. In the following, several basic principles of clinical care are addressed. These are of utmost importance for the IR to be recognized as a clinical partner at eye level, for the specialty to evolve and grow, and ultimately for the benefit of the patient.
