In this chapter, we present the core techniques in active acoustic sensing. These techniques serve as building blocks for various applications. We will start the chapter with a system model for transmitted and received signals. Next, the theoretical limits, design considerations, and key algorithms for timing and channel estimations will be discussed in detail. Lastly, we review methods for acoustic simulation.
