During the processing of coffee beans via dry and wet processing methods, the coffee industry, a major worldwide economic sector, generates solid wastes and wastewater significantly. The solid wastes generated include husk, pulp, wasted grinds, skin, and defective or low-quality coffee beans. These coffee-based solid organic wastes or biomass are reported to have stringent applications and pose severe environmental impacts when disposed of indiscriminately in land and water bodies. In line with the principles of sustainable development, many researchers across the globe are attempting to use coffee-based biomass as a source to extract and/or produce various value-added products for profitable usage. While aiming to enhance the sustainability and growth of the coffee industry thereby reducing pollution from coffee processing wastes, this chapter provides comprehensive information on the different types of coffee-based wastes, various technological interventions that are aimed at improving the growth and sustainability of the coffee industry while reducing pollution from the waste materials that are produced during coffee processing. Furthermore, the chapter also highlights the transformation of coffee-based wastes into value-added products, highlighting their application in various sectors.

摘要
