This chapter examines the conditions of communication with and about trees to evaluate the role of storytelling in the concept of the wood wide web, narrative trees, and the use of storytelling for tree care. Communicating trees draw attention because they have the potential to overturn modern worldviews. Sudden realizations of whispering forests often take the form of revelations and near-mystical experiences. In scientific contexts or technological metaphors, especially, the meaning of vegetal and arboreal communication becomes blurry. Analyses of the concept of communication in the works of artist James Bridle, forest ecologist Suzanne Simard, and anthropologist Eduardo Kohn; in new materialism; and in critiques of the seductive potential of storytelling provide insights into the diversity of voices that comprise interspecies communication, which extends far beyond the so-called wood wide web. Proposing arboreal mythology as a format for bringing together diverse stories, this chapter synthesizes the ideas from the previous chapter to reach a cohesive yet open conclusion.

摘要
