Research Partnership
摘要
The key element of this book on Mining Impacts on the Environment in the Central African Copperbelt of Zambia and the DR Congo is the development of a partnership relation between Copperbelt University (CBU) and the University of Lubumbashi (UNILU), respectively, to address common environmental challenges. Collaborative partnerships between Zambia and the DR Congo are vital in addressing the transboundary impacts of mining on the environment. Both nations are rich in mineral resources, particularly in the Copperbelt region, which spans across their borders. However, mining activities in this region have contributed to share the environmental challenges, such as soil degradation, biodiversity loss, deforestation, air and both surface and underground water contamination, and risks to community residents’ well-being, which transcend political boundaries. By working together, Zambia and the DR Congo pooled their human resources, expertise, infrastructures, and political will to develop joint strategies for mitigating mining environmental pollution. This collaboration has not only enhanced the effectiveness of environmental research but also fostered regional integration and solidarity, benefiting both nations’ ecosystems and communities.
