“From Sheet to Street” examines para- and metatextual tendencies of 0 to 9. It also pays special attention to its self-reflexivity, use of deixis, and the ways in which Acconci and Mayer foregrounded the physical medium of their magazine. Contemporaneous works by several 0 to 9 contributors, including Dan Graham, Adrian Piper, and Aram Saroyan––all of whom use printed mediums to expand their focus on logic and contingency, systematization, structures of information, and the act of writing itself—are also discussed. Tracing the move that 0 to 9 took away from the printed medium of the magazine to the more ephemeral contingencies of street-based performance, it is argued that this direction was not a rejection of the codex format but an inevitable corollary of the possibilities that the print medium had presented various artists and poets in the latter part of the 1960s.
