Towards a Comprehensive Understanding of Infodemic Literacy: Definition and Scope
摘要
In order to mitigate the potential dangers caused by the infodemic, a series of solutions have been proposed to empower communities to build resilience against misinformation. One of these solutions is strengthening individuals’ various literacy competencies. The primary types of literacy include health/digital health literacy, media literacy, information literacy, and scientific literacy. However, the infodemic is a complex socio-technical challenge that requires a comprehensive and specialized skill set. Therefore, we argue that a comprehensive and integrated literacy framework is needed to enable individuals to resist the multifaceted and ever evolving nature of the infodemic. In response to this need, we propose equipping individuals with “infodemic literacy” competencies. We position infodemic literacy as a competency-based framework specifically designed to combat the infodemic, which incorporates the competencies required from other literacy types within the context of the infodemic. We identify twelve key dimensions of infodemic literacy and explain their scope. Through this conceptualization, we aim to establish a foundational understanding of infodemic literacy and offer a systematic approach to strengthening individual and collective resilience against the infodemic.
