Literature is an essential component of language teaching in bilingual education programmes. The interest in literature and its use for language learning has increased since the 1980s (Bloemert et al., 2016). Its multiple benefits are well-attested in existing research (Bobkina & Dominguez Romero, 2018, 2019; Calafato, 2018), mostly linked to its capacity to raise cultural and intercultural awareness (Torrano-Guillamón et al., 2019; Urlaub, 2013) through the use of culturally authentic texts (Gómez-Rodríguez, 2012; Xerri & Xerri Agius, 2012) and enhance critical thinking skills and creativity (Bobkina & Stefanova, 2016; Kaïd & Touhami, 2020). Nonetheless, the place of literature in the foreign language curriculum is still a much-debated issue.
