The chapters in International Perspectives on Literature in English Language Teaching offer a global response to our central question of ‘What is the current place of literature in English language teaching (ELT)?’ There is clear consensus that effective use of literature offers invaluable opportunities across three areas: language learning, cultural engagement, and personal growth. The book provides frequent examples of literature as a cultural and pedagogical bridge, but these examples also show how using literature is never neutral, and a global perspective is therefore needed if we are to understand the role of literature in global efforts to internationalise and decolonise our classrooms. The cultural, emotional, and intellectual engagement offered by literature is an important distinction from students engaging with ‘content’ or ‘material’, inviting both students and teachers to question the broader contexts of anything they read.
