AI and Smart Cities: Legal Challenges in the UAE Metaverse Economy
摘要
The burgeoning popularity of the metaverse as an intersection between the physical and virtual worlds raises several difficulties as far as legal issues are concerned. Inspired by Neal Stephenson’s novel Snow Crash from 1992, the metaverse is evolving from a mere figment of the author’s imagination to a full-blown virtual world that will significantly impact many aspects of society, including the legal and the economic. This article addresses the main legal challenges connected with the metaverse, including but not limited to intellectual property law, privacy and data protection, risks, and the existing law and the virtual space. Particular attention has been given to Emirati’s legal system regarding how sharia law and other international law apply to metaverse technology. Some of these challenges include international litigation, enforcement of contracts, especially regarding foreign trademarks, and concerns over the issue of privacy, especially since the UAE intends to emerge as a mega player in the metaverse economic growth. The Dubai metaverse strategy and investment in web 3.0 technology suggest that such structural changes will be necessary for sharia and civil law to supervisory the morphing virtual landscape. This paper aims to present a holistic picture of how the metaverse may affect the deeply embedded legal traditions in the UAE by studying the interaction of current laws with the metaverse and its future.
