The Habsburg-French War of 1542–1544 was one of the phases in the longstanding conflict between Emperor Charles V[aut]Charles V and Francis I[aut]Francis I, King of FranceFrance (Knecht 1982, 362–376). Their clashes took place mainly in northwestern ItalyItaly and the Mediterranean. The French attack directly on the western border of the empire in the summer of 1542 created a new situation. It was perceived as a significant danger not only by the emperor but also by the Lutheran opposition, as there was a risk of the devastating military conflict shifting to the German heartland, and this was one of the reasons for the leadership of the Schmalkaldic League eventually deciding to support the emperor in defence against France (Lutz 1968, 7–19).
