In terms of influence in the field of ethics the big three are Immanuel Kant, John Stuart Mill, and Aristotle. With his focus on moral character, Aristotle takes a different approach from Deontological Ethicists like Kant and Utilitarians like Mill. His inquiry is not centered on ethical principles or consequences. In contrast to Teleological Ethics (goal-based) and Deontological Ethics (duty-based), Aristotle’s Virtue Ethics’ main concern is the path to a fulfilling life—one of excellence. As we will see in this chapter, Aristotle would be alarmed at the use of solitary confinement and its failure to build moral character.
