Teratology is the study of malformations and includes any extrinsic or intrinsic cause of birth defects or abnormalities of development. For a birth defect to occur, the teratogen exposure needs to affect the critical period of development, which in most cases in in early pregnancy during the embryonic period. This chapter will review the etiologies of fetal malformations and factors that may modify teratogenic outcomes.
