Challenges Faced by Teachers in Teaching Literacy to Orang Asli Students from Temuan Ethnic Group: A Case Study
摘要
Malaysia has made various efforts to foster equality and equity in education for the indigenous communities, including the Orang Asli. This study explores teachers’ challenges in teaching literacy to Orang Asli students from the Temuan ethnic group in Selangor. Semi-structured interview sessions were conducted with five teachers from five Orang Asli Primary Schools. The data were then analysed thematically to identify key issues faced by the teachers. The themes identified from the interviews are diverse student literacy levels, language barriers, parental roles, cultural and environmental factors, and limited teaching resources and training. The study concludes that educational policies must incorporate culturally responsive strategies and provide targeted support by providing suitable teaching resources and teacher training to improve literacy outcomes for Orang Asli.
