Rural economic diversification underlines the importance of productivity growth to balance development and reduce dependence of rural areas on regional/central government. The paper aims to systematically review the concept and mechanisms of rural economic diversification through tourism development and discuss at what stage rural areas need to diversify their economy and to propose effective ways to diversify their economy. Diversification acts as a powerful solution to achieve greater self-reliance and well-being for rural communities in responding to risks and disturbances to maintain system stability and minimize economic losses. The study indicates that fostering economic diversification via tourism in rural areas requires a strategy that incorporates initial motivation, bottom-up planning, and the strengthening of social capital. This approach can transform the socio-economic landscape for rural residents, create multifunctional resources, promote community-led planning, expand the concept of well-being, and enhance social capital.
