The first half of the chapter offers a general overview of the development of the evolutionary and cognitive sciences of religion with a particular attention on research programmes and approaches that are especially relevant for discussions of positioning, epistemology and methodology. In addition, the most significant commonalities of these approaches will be highlighted. The second half of chapter focuses on how the scientific character of the study of religion (scientificity) is understood by representatives and advocates of the evolutionary and cognitive sciences. This is then compared to the understandings of scientificity in the comparative religion to reveal some of its highly polemic as well as problematic aspects.
