Louis Eugène Antonin de Labaume (1783–1849) is best remembered today for his account of the Grande Armée’s disastrous invasion of Russia. In this essay, I examine a less well-known work by Labaume, and how he used it to critique the French imperial system that he ostensibly served with loyalty. Dedicated to Eugène Beauharnais, viceroy of the Kingdom of Italy, the Histoire abrégée (2 vols; Paris: Le Normant, 1811) appears to be little more than a nicely-written romp through Venetian history, but a closer reading shows that Labaume used his study of Venice to work through his disdain for Napoleonic imperialism.
