The current global environmental crisis and the significant negative impacts of technology and industry on the environment highlight the urgent need for transformative changes in engineering education. Despite increasing awareness of sustainability issues, existing engineering curricula often lack a structured approach to cultivating graduates’ environmental awareness, understanding of ecological principles, and adherence to environmental safety standards. This gap limits engineers’ capacity to address critical challenges related to sustainable development. Engineering teachers play a pivotal role in bridging this gap, as they are responsible for equipping students with the skills and knowledge required to integrate sustainability into professional practices. However, there is a notable lack of comprehensive frameworks and tools to enhance the environmental competence of engineering educators. This study addresses this challenge by identifying and substantiating the goals, content, and effective methodologies for fostering environmental competence in engineering teachers. Grounded in advanced principles of environmental education, the research introduces a combined model for integrating sustainability into engineering curricula and an algorithm for greening discipline content. By implementing these innovative approaches, the study provides examples of cases to empower engineering educators to prepare environmentally competent engineers capable of addressing ecological challenges and promoting sustainable production practices.
