The Implementation of English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) at Libyan Universities: University of Benghazi as a Sample

It has become a matter of fact that English dominates almost all facets of life. Due to globalization, English has become the international language used as a mediator among people with different languages. English in this globalized world is definitely the lingua franca. Thus, it has become a must that people not only learn English, but also use it to be part of this globalized world. Libya, of course, is not an exception in this international setting. As we know, English is used as a foreign language in Libya. It is a medium of instruction at some faculties such as Faculty of Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Dentistry, Faculty of Pharmacy, Faculty of Public Health, and Faculty of Information Technology at the public and private Libyan universities. So, this study is conducted to investigate about the implementation of EMI at these faculties in specific as a sample to be generalized on other faculties at the Libyan public and private universities. The researcher of this study is conducting qualitative research method, in which he uses literature review as secondary resources to dig deeply in the topic of study and interviewing 12 member staff from the abovementioned faculties as primary resources. The findings of the study reveal that both instructors and students encounter challenges in using EMI in class subjects. The researcher submits some recommendations regarding the application of EMI at Libyan universities.
