Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) is one of the leading causes of failure in patients undergoing total joint arthroplasty (TJA). At the same time, no single test has demonstrated absolute accuracy for the diagnosis of PJI. As such, the diagnosis of PJI can be challenging to make. Physicians often rely on a combination of history, physical exam findings, serological tests, and synovial tests in order to confirm or refute a diagnosis of PJI. In recent years, advancements in technology have resulted in new diagnostic tools that have been utilized in this setting.
