Testosterone Effects on the Prostate: Focusing on Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia
摘要
A long-standing, widely accepted dogma in the field of urology posits that testosterone therapy can increase the risk of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and prostate cancer. However, emerging evidence in recent decades has provided a more nuanced and complete understanding of the pathophysiology of BPH and prostate cancer that contradicts this traditional paradigm. This chapter explores the evolution of scientific and clinical evidence clarifying the relationship between testosterone, hypogonadism, and BPH. It provides an overview of current practices in treating men with BPH and androgen deficiency. Current evidence suggests that testosterone therapy has an essential role in treating men with hypogonadism and BPH.
